Real Namibia recommends

There are hundreds of funny stories about people who didn’t know how to drive offroad vehicles. The most unusual is about a man from Europe who was told that Mini tyres give better traction.

What is the real Namibia? How do you best see it? The real Namibia is slightly different to the one described in marketing brochures and websites. It has a sense of humour about it. Having written hundreds of Namibian tour and destination descriptions, containing adjectives like 'magnificent', 'secret', 'vast', 'solitary' and 'apricot', Namibian writer Pierre Mare, has put together a practical guide to Namibia. Have fun! Explore!

Need to know!

Rain
The marketing description, 'Namibia has 360 days of sunshine per year' has been suspended for this summer.
In fact, we have probably had about three days of sunshine. Explanations for this vary from strange activity on the part of the El Nino current, the hole in the ozone layer, global warming and switching of the magnetic poles to a blessing from God and / or the best luck we have had since the 1974 rainy season. The temperature is cool, Namibians are cheerful, the veldt is green as a St Patrick's Day parade and the animals are damp, if not soggy.

Beer & kids
It is not unusual for Namibians to give their children a small sip of beer. Apparently, this is a Bavarian tradition, where beer is regarded as a basic foodstuff.

Queueing
If you find yourself in a queue in Namibia, make some small talk to find out what the person ahead of you is doing. It may be that he or she is waiting for something else entirely or keeping a place for someone. If this is the case, move ahead of the person.

Conversation
If you want to start a conversation with any Namibian, talk about rain. All Namibians can talk about the topic for hours without losing interest, and will appreciate your interest in something that is fundamentally important to them.

Sleeping in your car
Only do so in a camp site. Turn on the handbrake.

The rain continues

Mariental, in Southern Namibia, has been partially flooded due to an overflow of water from the Hardap Dam. The road to South Africa has been closed. And for the first time in quite a while, Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert holds water.

The blue skies are back.
The rain has ended.
Winter is on the way.
